If you’re in Tallahassee, the best place to see Christmas lights would start at the Little English Guesthouse Bed and Breakfast on Timberlane Road, go past Dorothy Oven Park on Thomasville Road and end up at the Allison House just before you reach Havana.
But if you’re not in Tallahassee, then undoubtedly the best place to see Christmas lights would be London, of course! (I’m sure you guessed I would say that). When we were children, our parents would take us into the city to see the lights. We’d drive down the main roads (Regent Street, Oxford Street etc.) and then we’d park the car and walk around looking at the shop windows, all spectacularly dressed up for Christmas. Some told a story with mannequins (in England they’re called dummies), others were just the latest fashions for sale with a Christmas twist. It was one of my favorite things to do, and didn’t cost a thing!
London streets were usually cold in December, although there wasn’t very much snow. Everyone was bundled up and in good spirits despite the weather. There were often little groups of carolers on the street corners. The Salvation army group was usually the loudest because they had musical instruments, and truth be told, they were the best. They sang actual Christmas carols, and they sang in tune! The shops were warm, but never stiflingly hot, and even office buildings had a string of lights in the windows. London is still my favourite place to be at Christmas. Alas, it’s been decades since that’s been a regular occurence.
Perhaps you can’t go to London. You’ve looked at the news and seen the chaos in the airports, with snow forcing the cancellation of flights, or labour disputes and strikes causing general chaos. That news has convinced you to stay home and enjoy a little piece and quiet this Christmas season. Who can blame you?
But maybe you want to experience a little piece of England in Tallahassee, Florida…. yes?, yes?
These folks obviously wanted to go to England for their anniversary, but didn’t. Maybe they couldn’t. I can think of a dozen reasons in this post-Covid world why travel plans have been upended. Inflation costs, flu season, recurring Covid, job losses and who knows what else. So they made lemonade with those lemons and came to the Little English Guesthouse Bed and Breakfast for a little Florida staycation, just a couple hours from home. What a clever idea!
You should consider doing the same thing, for a taste of England, without the expense of crossing the pond.
After 19 years inn business, we know a thing or two about providing an authentic experience. And, for many of our previous guests who actually were planning a trip to Britain, we were delighted to provide suggestions on the things to see…and the parts to miss! They’ve come back to stay with us and tell us about their marvelous trip to the homeland!
Come see the Christmas lights in Tallahassee, and allow us convince you to take a trip to London to see the most marvelous Christmas lights anywhere on earth (we’re a little biased!).
Merry Christmas to you all, hope to see you in 2023! Book your room with us, right now!
