It seems like I write a blog, but then they go and do something else to get themselves all over my news screen and I think of something i forgot to say.
As a reminder, when Meghan came on the scene, she was quite well liked. Like Diana, she seemed to be a breathe of fresh air to the stuffy Royal Family.
Diana was much more casual about things, and she certainly did much to modernize the family. Who knows if anyone thanked her for her trouble.
Meghan, arrived in the same way.
Finally, a woman of color.
A woman with a career.
She’d already earned her own money, owned a home (in Canada, I think), and was almost 40 and quite confident about her opinions, and goals for her life.
Ordinarily, this modern woman would be applauded for “making it” in the world. But she wasn’t marrying into an ordinary family, now was she?
And then the drama began.
Meghan and her father, Thomas, had some sort of falling out. He was coming to walk her down the aisle, and then he wasn’t.
And then he was.
And then he had a heart attack. And he wasn’t coming to the wedding.
So King Charles , Harry’s dad, walked her halfway and she walked the rest of the way all by herself.
“How very modern!” some said. “What a nerve!” others said. As a divorced woman wearing a white, wedding dress with a train, marrying in a church, some others just wanted to swoon on their swooning couch with disapproval.
My, oh my, oh my!
And their first Royal trip as a couple, to Australia and New Zealand Meghan was a big hit, did everything “right”, kissed all the babies and made lovely speeches. Like a good Royal representative of the Queen.
But then a fan in a crowd somewhere on a Royal tour, asked her to autograph something and she did. And she got told off for it. Royals aren’t supposed to autograph things like some sort of Hollywood celebrity.
Oops!
And on a Royal trip somewhere, she teared up and said she was not ok, (when asked if she was ok). I believe she had just had her first child and was was likely exhausted, like most post-partum Mums.
But Royals are not supposed to show emotion in public.
Oops!
And from there on out, it appears to have gone downhill.
The gutter, tabloid press hounded Meghan and Harry. Barely disguised racist comments about a woman hardly anybody in England knew, appeared on the front pages. Social media sites went crazy with the hateful comments.
She was acting like a brash American, said the Brits. She interrupts Prince Harry, said the Royal fans. She thinks she’s a celebrity, said those who believed spouses of a Royal should dress well and keep quiet.
I’m no fan of Meghan, or the institution of the monarchy in general (except the late Queen), but I’m not surprised to learn she read all the hate mail / press / twitters and got severely depressed.
I think I would do, too.
Harry, poor Harry. He just wanted to get married and have a family. But if you remember (and only British people tend to), Harry couldn’t seem to turn a girlfriend into a fiancee. Every girl he dated (aristocratic young ladies, as well as models, and other working women) ended up not wanting to marry him.
They couldn’t handle being harassed, their families being followed, constant photographers in their space, lies printed in the newspapers (before the internet!). None of them wanted to live in the goldfish bowl that is (and was) the Royal family.
This is not news. For those of us old enough to remember, Diana once marched up to, and put her hand over, a paparazzi camera lens (in Switzerland I think) to stop him taking photos of her children.
At least Diana’s hounding by the gutter press occurred before the internet and social media was a thing.
Megxit – remember that? The exit of Prince Harry and his bride to Canada, around the same time, Britain exited the European Union (Brexit). The notion was that Meghan somehow “forced” Harry to turn his back on his family and leave Britain.
It started in the Garden of Eden, the woman is always to blame!
For those of us (mostly Brits) old enough to remember, Harry verbalized his disgust with the British tabloid, gutter press decades before he even met Meghan. He blamed them for his mother’s untimely death, probably with good reason.
He described the best years of his life as the years when he was outside of Britain, in the military, and away from the prying eyes of paparazzi cameras. He spent time in Africa, doing charitable work, away from the hounding of the press, and regularly expressed his joy about that time.
The notion that Meghan somehow hauled him away from Britain, kicking and screaming, is rather implausible for those of us around when this young man was born and watched him grow up.
Harry left Britain of his own accord, folks.
He had probably been wanting to for a very long time, and finally found a way to make it happen, with Meghan. Which is a shame, because Meghan arrived on the scene, ready to settle in Britain and make a life in a foreign country.
As one does, when one chooses to marry a foreigner.
To all those still saying Meghan forced Harry to leave Britain, I say, codswallop!
Harry is a grown man, a decorated veteran and had he truly wanted to stay in Britain, and continue to live the Royal life as it was, he would have found a way.
Truth is, he really didn’t want to.
He led a privileged, Royal life, through no choice of his own. Who amongst us would ask to live that goldfish bowl lifestyle?
Not I.
But now – now it’s time to have some peace and quiet. Harry, Meghan- go about living your lives as quietly and peaceably as you can. Enough with the “confessionals”.
British press – enough already. They’re gone – to California, leave them alone. Enough with the gouging up more drama.
All of you – enough already! Don’t make me come up there!
