Kate and William

That does sound something like the beginning of a fairy story, doesn’t it? “Kate and William set off across the meadow, picking daisies as they went…..”

In fact they were in Belgium this week at the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendale, during World War One. I’m glad that Britain and most of Europe take the time to remember the horrors of war. During this week, Brits wear red poppies to remind us of the lives lost during that war.

It is a worthy reminder, particularly for very young people who may not have anyone in their lives who’ve seen the horrors of war, of ignorance and hatred.

Kate and William, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (that’s Prime Minister Theresa May to Kate’s right) are doing a fine job of representing Britain abroad, and indeed a fine job of carrying out their duties with dignity and their own style. Modern but still continuing with tradition….William is very popular with people in England who know he will be King one day, and he’s certainly picked a lovely Queen.

But that’s after Charles has had his turn, after all he’s been waiting over 60 years…

The Royal family does have something of a fairy story quality to the whole business. Particularly to most Americans I speak with, who have lots of questions about what it’s like to grow up in England, with a Queen, and Diana (she was roughly my age) and the rest of the family.

Most normal people (like me) have never met the Queen or even been in close proximity, it’s just not something we ever think about.

Kind of like the average American would never meet the President, or ever assume to be in the same room at any point in their lifetime.

But they are indeed, a business. In fact, insiders (like the butler) have frequently said in the last few decades that Diana, and Kate too, probably, joined The Firm. Because it’s no small feat to live their lives, in a glass bowl, in a global world – and look gorgeous, and speak intelligently, whichever country they may find themselves in, to represent Britain well.

Like fairy stories, there is a small army of people to help, butlers, maids, cooks, nannies, travel agents, PR gurus and the like. But I’m pretty sure, Kate and William would probably love to set off across a meadow, picking daisies – but they have a job to do, to keep the story alive….and that is what they do…quite well so far.
