I’m no photographer, but I am a big fan of of those that are patient and observant enough to capture moments that I would miss.
This photo was a winner in the British Underwater Photographer of the Year entitled “Iceberg Graveyard”. I keep up with them because they’re always spectacular photos (and I envy their talent).
This one reminded me that I am yet to see Alaska – above ground or under water. It also reminds me that when I run into people at the supermarket, or in our breakfast room, or maybe while driving and they give me the 2-fingered salute as they cut me off in traffic – that everyone has something else going on underneath.
The bad attitude on the surface is often a cover for the immense pain underneath.
Or fear.
Or heartache.
Or loss.
If we knew everything that was going on with a person, we would treat them differently, perhaps with a little more compassion, mercy and understanding. I know firsthand, from years in social services, that once one finds out the “story” of a person, it’s easier to not be curt or offended or reciprocate anger.
Unfortunately, most of us will never know that story. We just have to choose grace, choose to be kind in the face of rudeness – and that is easy to say, almost impossible to do every single day when we each have our own worries.
This photo was a good visual for me – and for you – to remember that jagged, rough point you’ve been jabbed with doesn’t reveal what’s really underneath.
Pause before retaliating with your own sharp, jagged words and consider what might lie beneath.
