Well she came and went, and caused enough devastation to wipe out the vast majority of Tallahassee’s electricity (air conditioning!), but thankfully, and we must always find something to thankful about, no one was killed in Tallahassee. We are thankful we had no property damage but so many others, did.
We were closed for 4 nights because nobody wants to check into a cute little bed and breakfast with no air-conditioning or lights. Imagine that! But almost a week later and there are still about 4,000 addresses without power, and it is still in the 90s in Tallahassee.
Locals have all been talking about the last direct hit on Tallahassee (Kate, 31 years ago) but fail to remember that Kate had lost her steam and was “merely” a tropical storm by the time it hit Tallahassee.
Hurricane Hermine was a Cat. 1 and in 2016 we have probably twice the population (and an annoying dependence on WiFi and all things electronic) than in 1985.
I have actually been very impressed (even when we were without power) at how fast power was being restored to the city. Particularly when we were able to go to the shop (running out of Earl Grey tea warrants an emergency trip, you know!) and see the absolute spaghetti mess of power lines, the beauty and horror of tall, once-majestic trees ripped out by their roots and lying on the ground.
And even more impressive, to see strangers helping each other, and sharing what they had.
So we’re back in business, thankful to live in such a great community, happy to see the back of Hermine, and looking forward to the end of hurricane season in about 60 days….
