So below is how the Commonwealth works (no, this does not include the Commonwealth of Virginia, that’s a whole different blog topic), I’m sure a holdover from the days of Britannia ruling the waves and the sun never setting on the British Empire and all that propaganda.
A while back we found ourselves in Grand Cayman (just a hop, skip and a jump from Florida, as it happens) and as well as being absolutely gorgeous of course, it also felt very British (must be all that tax-haven money flowing in from the financial district…also another blog topic LOL).
Turns out that the old colonies were so well organized by the British, they’ve hung onto some of it – and hopefully improved on it. There didn’t seem to be any tea served at 4 o’ clock, what a pity. I’m told that Bermuda still does that, so Bermuda is now on my bucket list – plus I heard that Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones hang out there, another reason to stop in.
You’ll notice that the Falkland Islands are still on the list, (it’s down there near Antarctica, for those of you geographically challenged) and yes those are the ones over which Margaret Thatcher went to war, when I was a teenager.
So now you know.
And yes, I agree, it is absurdly confusing for non-Brits. (And to some Brits too, I have no doubt).
